The review

Four checks, piece by piece

Our drape review is the soft-goods part of the Venue Systems Health Check. It is a review of condition: what we found and what we recommend.

A staff member working a strap through the heading of a black drape in the workshop

Fixings

Ties, webbing and eyelets, where cloth meets hardware. Worn ones are replaced or reinforced.

A pulled thread running out of damaged red velvet pile near a seam

Stitching

Seams, hems and headings. Loose runs and strained seams are resewn by our machinists.

Deep red velvet with patches of faded, flattened pile

Fabric

Wear, marks, fading and damage across the full drop. Cleaning is matched to the fibre.

White tide marks along the hem of a black stage drape after water

Fire treatment

We check the treatment record and look for signs it has failed, such as tide marks from water. Anything due is booked for re-treatment.

Questions

Maintenance and inspection, answered

How often should stage drapes be checked?

Our default is every 12 months, and sooner for stock that works hard: touring drapes, hire returns and busy multipurpose halls. It is our recommendation, and we set the next date at each visit.

What do you check during a drape review?

Four things, piece by piece: the fabric, the stitching, the fixings where cloth meets hardware, and the fire treatment record and its condition.

Does the review certify our drapes?

No. It is a review of condition, and the report sets out what we found and what we recommend. Where re-treatment is done, the certificate states it was applied by a trained and competent technician.

Do you check the track, hoists and rigging too?

Those are reviewed by Theatre Safe Australia in the same Venue Systems Health Check. Reveal is part of TSA, so one conversation can cover the whole stage.

What happens if you find a problem?

It is fixed or scoped. Small repairs and cleaning happen on the visit where access allows, larger sewing repairs come back to our workshop, and treatment that is due is booked for re-treatment.
